Madge Gill

Madge Gill

On saturday a friend and I went to Manchester Vintage Fair at the Whitworth Gallery. Whilst I didn’t take many worthwhile photos at the fair itself, or even buy anything for that matter, I did discover an artist in the galleries surrounding the event. Madge Gill, an English outsider artist came from a rather disturbed background, only to as an adult have two of her four children pass away, which led to her becoming a mediumistic artist. She claimed her work was guided by a spirit called “Myrninerest” (My inner rest). Unusal for me to enjoy what is considered outsider art, I found her use of biro on linen and canvas to be very interesting and I feel it would be a media suited to my personal illustration style.
