Las Meninas Project: Media

Las Meninas Project: Media

Having decided to share my work in progress with the Las Meninas project, I’ve taken some photographs to share my advancements as I go along.

Upon thinking about our chosen piece and the nature of it’s media, I’ve decided, before even sketching that I would like to work on hardboard. As the Tapestry is made up of natural fibres (wool & silk), I wanted to carry on with something that was natural and textural, so I’ve chosen a wooden base to work with.

So, today I prepped my hardboard  with gesso. I’m going to sand the primer down a bit, so more of the wood grain shows through into my piece, to keep a natural texture running through it. Working with wood also dictates which medium you can use to create your piece, so I’ve chosen acryclic paints as it is a water-based medium which will allow me to create transparents layers whilst also allowing me to work in an opaque manner when needed. Now that I’ve chosen my medium, the next step is to to decide how I’m going to interpret the Tapestry and then create some sketches and do some visual research to follow it up.
