Las Meninas project: Inspiration

Las Meninas project: Inspiration

Having thought about our tapestry and it’s symbolic meanings, I’ve decided to interpret the piece using Haida art as my inspiration. As I have lived in British Columbia, Canada I thought I’d get in touch with the roots of the place. Whilst I’m not of the Haida nation myself, I remember, admiring the artists use of simplistic colour, bold lines and interpretation of nature.

Animals represent all aspects of the Earth and Man-kinds creation in Haida mythology. Thus I’ve decided to re-interpret selections of the Tapestry, replacing the human figures with animal figures that embody similar characteristics or that have similar folkloric tales.
