Entomology – Cicada

Just a quick preview of my first insect for the Manchester University Entomology Department Briefing.

I’ve decided to try giving watercolours a chance, because 1. I thought it would be a challenge and 2. Because I own some lovely W&N watercolours that have never been used and would be a waste if they never did. I am by no means proficient in watercolours, especially as it’s been years since I picked the bloody things up, but here you go:

I am somewhat pleased with the results, though I just see the errors I’ve made and the messy lines, which pains me as I’m a stickler for clean-lined work.

Now just to paint about 50 more of the blighters, varying the genus as I go, of course. My plans are to work them into some sort of pattern and perhaps create a fabric or something. The brief states the work is meant to be child friendly, but I have no ambitions as far as working with or being involved with children, so I am going to use the brief to my own benefit and follow my own path.
