Editorial work

Editorial work

As part of my project, I decided to take on an editorial-type piece. However, I did it a bit backwards as I created the artwork and found the accompanying article later on. Luckily, the subject of the piece was quite broad so it wasn’t too difficult to find an appropriate article.

I chose an article from The Guardian titled “Why do women still have to choose between careers and families?” by Jane Scott Paul, which was a pretty close match to my intentions with the illustration I did. I ended up separating the piece I did into two parts to balance the layout I created in InDesign using the text. I think it works well visually and I feel the work itself brings an interest to the article and draws the eye in, giving a clue to what the story is about but not giving everything away.

For my first real attempt at editorial (all be it, a little backwards), I don’t think it’s too bad and I’d like to carry on working editorially (with the articles coming first), building my skills and expanding my portfolio.
