Christening gift

Christening gift

I’ve never been to a christening before. I’ve been invited to a few, but have not actually gone to any. This time, however, it’s a family occasion on the boyfriends side, so it’s a must go. I’m not a baby person and I don’t know many babies or what’s suitable for them, so when it comes to christening gifts I’m at a loss. I grew up loving Beatrix Potter’s Peter Rabbit, so we’ve got the baby (a girl), a collection of stories in a nice hardbound book. Though I kind of want to keep it for myself, as my own set was long lost in a move many years ago (something I still despair over now).

I thought, to accompany the book, I’d do an illustration for the baby. I started sketching and decided to do a little town scene. I wanted to keep it feminine and I as sifted through photos of my own travels for town inspiration, I came across the little kiosks in Paris, selling everything from newspapers to flowers and decided to go with that as a theme. From there, it grew to a florists. I did it this evening and didn’t spend overly long on it and there are some bits I’d change if I was to do it again, but in the mean time, I’m happy enough with it.

I don’t entirely know if it’s appropriate for a christening gift, but I think it’ll look nice on the nursery wall. I might have another go at something “baby appropriate”, perhaps something with animals… until then, this is it.

EDIT:
Changed the background up a bit.
