Arnold Boecklin

Arnold Boecklin

Arnold Boecklin, a Swiss born Symbolist painter known for his paintings of Mythological scenes.

I enjoy his works, not for their style, but more for their content. As a Symbolist painter, Boecklin subscribed to the theory of the Symbolist Manifesto.

“In this art, scenes from nature, human activities, and all other real world phenomena will not be described for their own sake; here, they are perceptible surfaces created to represent their esoteric affinities with the primordial Ideals.”

I would like to further explore this ideal in my use of pattern, using a single image as a symbol to represent something with much more depth and intimation, allowing me to perhaps simplify some of my designs without sacrificing their meaning. I am hoping to pursue this research technique for future projects.
